Park Tae-Kyung

Abstract
Purpose : This study was conducted to analyze the stress levels of Korean Air Force pilots who experience stressful working conditions. The results may be used to manage stress and to develop stress management programs for Air Force pilots.

Method : This study was based on a questionnaire survey carried out on 290 pilots of several wings. Data were collected through a standardized self-report questionnaire that consisted of questions regarding general characteristics, personality, social support, family support, stress, and coping.

Results : The main results of this study are summarized as follows: First, according to the general characteristics, stress was shown to be significantly higher in people who were younger, single, living with a smaller family, and having a lower education. According to the characteristics related to the job, stress was higher in people with
fewer years of employment, lower rank, and lower monthly income. Second, by analyzing the correlation between variables, direct-active coping showed positive correlation with age, number of children, number of family members, years of employment, monthly income, job satisfaction, period of exercise, self-esteem, superior support, colleague support and family support, while indirect-active coping showed positive correlation with age, number of family member, years of employment, monthly income, job satisfaction, period of exercise, self-esteem, family support and direct-active coping.

Conclusion : This result provides profound implications for pilots¡¯ stress relief and shows the need for the development of a stress management program. In other words, by developing a stress management program and an efficient coping strategy, we should help lower pilots¡¯ stress by controlling constraint factors and reducing the stress of the pilots who are the main force of the Air Force.
